If your employee comes from a country with a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) they’ll have some access to Medicare. Please see the Australian Government Department of Human Services website for further details on Medicare access.

Medicare will cover your overseas staff for medically necessary treatment as a public patient in a public hospital and subsidised medicines under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. They will not be covered for out-of-hospital treatment (i.e. visiting a general practitioner) they’re covered for the duration of their visa.
SWEDEN, FINLAND, NORWAY, UNITED KINGDOM, THE NETHERLANDS, BELGIUM & SLOVENIA:
Medicare will cover your overseas staff for medically necessary treatment as a public patient in a public hospital and benefits for out-of-hospital treatment and subsidised medicines under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. They will be covered for the duration of their visa.
ITALY, MALTA:
Medicare will cover your overseas staff for medically necessary treatment as a public patient in a public hospital and benefits for out-of-hospital treatment and subsidised medicines under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. They will be covered for 6 months from your date of arrival in Australia. -
Yes. If they have received their Medicare card, however they may want to keep their Overseas Visitors Cover to complement their Medicare access and provide ambulance cover.
